A medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury is damage to the ligament on the inner side of the knee, often caused by a direct blow to the outside of the knee or a twisting motion. Symptoms include pain, swelling, instability, and difficulty walking or bearing weight on the affected leg. Treatment typically involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), along with immobilization using a knee brace or splint. Physical therapy is often recommended to restore strength, stability, and range of motion in the knee. Severe cases may require surgery.
