Ankle syndesmosis ligament injury, also known as a high ankle sprain, involves damage to the ligaments that connect the tibia and fibula bones in the lower leg. This type of injury is often caused by excessive external rotation or dorsiflexion of the foot. Symptoms include pain above the ankle, swelling, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight. Treatment may involve rest, ice, compression, and elevation (R.I.C.E), immobilization with a brace or boot, physical therapy, and in severe cases, surgical intervention to repair the damaged ligaments.
