Ankle instability refers to a condition in which the ankle joint is prone to giving way or feeling unstable. This can occur due to repeated ankle sprains, ligament damage, or weakened muscles around the ankle. Individuals with ankle instability may experience sensations of the ankle “giving out,” swelling, pain, and difficulty walking on uneven surfaces. Treatment may involve physical therapy to strengthen the ankle, bracing or taping for support, and in some cases, surgical intervention to repair or reconstruct the damaged ligaments.
