Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is a condition in which a blood clot forms in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. This can lead to pain, swelling, warmth, and redness in the affected area. DVT can be caused by factors such as prolonged immobility, surgery, pregnancy, or certain medical conditions. If a blood clot breaks loose, it can travel to the lungs and cause a life-threatening condition called pulmonary embolism. Treatment often involves blood thinners, compression stockings, and in some cases, clot-dissolving medications or procedures may be necessary.
