Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is a chronic infectious condition caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. It primarily affects the skin, peripheral nerves, and mucous membranes, leading to skin lesions, nerve damage, and potentially disfigurement. The disease is transmitted through respiratory droplets, but it is not highly contagious. Early diagnosis and treatment with multi-drug therapy are essential for curing leprosy and preventing deformities. The stigma surrounding leprosy persists in some communities, despite the disease being treatable.
